Almost all of us have seen the episode of Friends where Phoebe is a masseuse. Is it really like that; is that what it really means to get a massage?
How many of you ever went to get a massage and left frustrated, less than impressed or thought, “Ah, I could take it or leave it? Then listen up the next 45 second are for you.
If you want to get the most bang for your buck when seeking a massage, “Know” your therapist.
Ask for the therapist credentials ahead of time, Know what they are certified in and what they specialize in (is it more therapeutic type services, or relaxation services, etc)
All of this is necessary due to the wide scope of modalities which massage therapy is currently licensed under. (Thanks to MTBOK this may soon be changing!)
Know what your desired outcome is:
-Are you willing to endure a little discomfort on the table for an hour, in order to reap the benefits for weeks or months after?
-Or do you just want to lie there, relax and fall asleep?
"Know" your therapist modality preference, and they'll know you.
So know what it is you’re looking to achieve as the end result. Is it a relaxing journey along the way, or is it relief from some discomfort you may be experiencing. Don't be afraid to ask questions! Before setting up the appointment, ask your therapist what they specialize in? Can they explain the anatomy of each and every individual muscle as they are working on you, or are they vague and brief and may even categorize the muscle as a group? Group examples would be: Calf, hamstrings, Rotator cuff. They should be able to tell you individual muscle names. Examples would be Soleus, Gastrocnemius, Adductor Magnus, Long head, or short head of bicep etc…..
I always say a massage therapist is only as good as their anatomy! Meaning they are only as good as they know their anatomy.
I know there is nothing more frustrating than paying good hard earned money for a massage and leavening feeling disappointed and aggravated that you just didn't get what you needed, or wanted. Even more frustrating you don’t know how to ask for something different!! Check their credentials, research their credentials, and please: Don't be afraid to ask your therapist to try deeper or light pressure! Trust me we love feedback and positive criticism! We truly are the students each and every time we enter that massage therapy room, there's always something to learn.
